Dental Exam
Portland, OR

With the majority of dental issues being avoidable, the fact remains that having a regular exam is important. When you obtain your dental exam through Uptown Family Dental, the dentist will be able to identify any issues early and provide options and solutions to any problems that are revealed.

What is Involved In Dental Exams?

Normally, a dental exam is part of a hygiene appointment. As the exam begins, your dentist will conduct a thorough check of your teeth, gums, tongue, and cheeks. They will also ask questions concerning your dental history. After your examination, the dentist will order x-rays so that any hidden issues can be seen. You may be asked about your lifestyle and eating habits that relate to your teeth. While the dentist is assessing your teeth, he will be checking for tooth decay, gum disease, and bone loss.

Appointment Length

Normally a dental exam/hygiene appointment will take no more than an hour to complete. New patient appointments will be closer to two hours, to allow for a thorough evaluation and discussion of the patients' oral health goals. You need to keep in mind that your exam will also include a check of your brushing habits and flossing. These checks will help ensure that your teeth are being cared for.

How Often is a Dental Exam Necessary?

Having teeth and gums that are healthy is important. How often you visit us will be recommended by our dentist or hygienist. A regular exam by the dentist is usually recommended every six months. If dental concerns are present, the dentist may advise a patient to have more frequent exams. These frequent exams will help to determine if problems are progressing to the point of needing dental treatment. This will also help you to remain confident knowing that your oral health is being taken care of.

Types of Dental Exams

Dental exams come in a wide variety of types that are dependent upon a problem or underlying issue that you are having. One exam type is comprehensive and takes place at your first dental exam. It is usually done again a few years later. The comprehensive exam includes full dental x-rays, evaluation for gum disease, and an oral cancer screening. The exam looks at each individual tooth to ensure each tooth remains healthy. This exam will become the baseline for all future dental appointments. A regular exam is also known as a recall dental exam. The dentist will conduct this examination as you schedule each appointment. This examination helps the dentist find any issues within the oral cavity which may have appeared since the last dental appointment. An exam that is limited will surround the problems that are occurring. This means if you are experiencing oral decay, the dentist will focus on that issue. The dentist will take x-rays of areas of concern so that he will be able to prescribe the proper treatment.
